THE PRINCE OF YELA AND AMBASSADOR OF THE PEULHBy the time Abdou Rahmane Diallo RAHMANE reached age 13 he was already a popular musical artist in Senegal. As a young boy attending elementary school in Fouta (North Senegal), he represented his school in singing competitions and won a number of awards for his phenomenal voice which has been compared to Baba Maal one of the leaders in Senegal’s vibrant music scene. In 1989, Baba Maal praised Rahmane on Senegal television and asked him to join his band. Rahmane went on to sing with Baba Maal throughout Senegal. Almost ten years later, after winning a competition between 30 artists from Senegal and the Francophonie award in France competing against 95 artists from around the world, he became the new great hope of Senegalese music and an ambassador of the Hal Pulaar people. After winning the Francophonie he toured Belgium, Switzerland, Italy, Germany, France, Spain, Danmark, Turkey, Holland and the UK. In 1999, Rahmane received a scholarship from the ex-President of Senegal Abdou Diouf to study at a school for the arts in Belgium. Before his return to Senegal in 2005, he recorded an album called Diaro Allah which is a mix of Yela, Zook, Salsa, AfroPop and World Music. Now back in Senegal, Rahmane is determined to conquer the entire musical world with his songs about Africa, children, culture and peace. His songs are a calling to young people to not response to violence with violence, love each other and where they come from and to respect and save their culture. |
