Fafadi was born in June 1975 in Ziguinchor, a town in Senegal’s southern region of Casamance (the area of Senegal located below Gambia). At nine years old, Fafadi started singing with his family, who were inspired by the music of Toure Kunda, a traditional Senegalese musician also from Casamance. Adding the influence of Reggae from Gambia, Fafadi combined two musical styles to create his own unique musical style. In 1997, Fafadi started his own group called Wulaba Sound with two other musicians, Ama Jang and Kambano. With this group, he recorded BOOM BADA BOOM, a song which raised awareness of the continual ethnic conflict in Casamance. Positive Black Soul, founding fathers of hip-hop in Senegal, heard this song and called on Fafadi to join them on a compilation called SeneRap Act II in 1998. Between 2000 and 2004, Fafadi was featured on many albums including Toure Kunda, Bideew Bou Bess, Bibson and Samuel Winchester, a Jamaican man based in Senegal. In November 2004, Fafadi released his first album, Vitamine A, which focused on the topics of love, peace and Allah. |
